Weekly #5 (02.06.2025 – 08.06.2025)

Howdy!

The last couple of weeks in Poland have been either too hot or too rainy! At least the weather hasn't stopped me from working on Squars :)

The Cards System is a huge task and still a work in progress, but the development is steady. Each week, I manage to cover more and more cases, as cards can modify pretty much anything in the game. I'm aiming to make adding new cards as simple as possible.

In the meantime, I experimented with colors and opted for something much easier on the eyes. Here's the result:

Siege of shadow squares!

This seemingly small change encouraged me to go even further in that direction. After some searching, I think I’ve found the perfect color palette for Squars and its semi-heavy, occasionally absurd atmosphere.

I present to you: The APOLLO Palette, which you can download here:

I still need to actually put the palette to use—can’t wait to see the results!

One last thing, which might also be the most important: I think I need to upscale the game’s "resolution"—and by that, I mean the size of each square.
Right now, one tile is 32×32 pixels, which has been fine so far. But the problem came up when I tried to add more detail to the exploder enemy—specifically, pulsating pimples.
I ran into an issue while animating the pimple scaling: they’re just too small for smooth interpolation!

So, the plan for next week is to basically upscale the entire game—which shouldn't be too problematic. At least, I hope so! :)

As always, have a great week, changelog below!
