Weekly #3
Hello there!
First of all, I decided to move Weeklys from Friday to Sunday – this way I’m not in a rush and can spend a bit more time writing in more detail.
This week, I focused heavily on two things:
- Improving the visuals of the game
- Creating a "cards system", which will be one of the main mechanics of the game
As for the visuals, I want to achieve a slightly spookier look. I get it – it’s all squares, but it’s far from impossible. For starters, I’ve implemented a simple color change for the day/night cycle and started working with lights:
Pretty neat, right?
Cards are an entirely different beast, though. I want to achieve something similar to the Rogue Tower system, but with a twist – the player should be able to compose their own card deck to play with. I’m not entirely sure how to implement this, as there are some pretty obvious problems with this approach:
- How big should the deck be?
- What if the player doesn’t have enough cards to fill the entire deck?

What if the run takes so long that the player runs out of cards from the deck?
I’m pretty sure there might be more issues like this, but still, I want to give it a shot.
Could you recommend some games with deck-building mechanics for me to try out?
As for smaller changes, I added level labels on top of the buildings. This small change, in my opinion, makes a huge difference in the readability of the game.
Also, did you know that everything in Squars must be a square? Yes, even the towers’ shooting range!

I need to work on the visuals for the range indicator, as it’s way too boring right now!

- Damaging shield visuals now take the angle of the hit into account.
- Damage text can now be colorized (for example, blue for shield damage).
- Changed controls to select with LMB and attack with RMB.
